Navantia, technologically successful naval programs

Navantia, a world reference in the design, construction and integration of military ships with a high technological content, as well as repairs and modernizations, includes in its lines of activity the design and manufacture of Systems (Combat, Command and Control, Integrated Platform Control), Firing Directions, Propulsion Plants and Life Cycle Support for all its products, which allows it to offer its customers integral products and services with high added value.

The most important program is the S-80 submarine, the biggest industrial and technological challenge ever faced by the national defense industry, with which Navantia makes an enormous technological leap, going from building in Spain with a foreign design to building in Spain with its own design, thus acquiring a technical capacity only within the reach of a reduced group of countries.

The S-80 becomes one of the most modern and automated conventional submarines on the international market, which, among other technological advances in combat and platform control systems, will have an atmosphere independent propulsion system (AIP) which will allow the submarine to generate electrical energy at any depth and will reduce the need to leave at periscopic level, improving its discretion.

Among the programs for the Navy, the F-110 frigate also stands out, whose design also contains a series of technological programs. It is a smart ship, designed as part of a digital ecosystem that optimizes design, construction, operation and maintenance activities in a cybersecure environment. Among its innovations, two products stand out: the Digital Twin and the Integrated Services System.

The Digital Twin is a virtual replica of the ship that contains all the ship’s information from all the platform’s systems and equipment; it supports its maintenance and operation even thousands of miles away from the arsenal, providing support and added value in decision making. It is complemented by the Integrated Services System, which integrates functionalities such as lighting, public address, monitoring, television cameras, secure wireless access services and diverse sensorization into a single system, also allowing interaction with crew members.

In the case of the design and construction of five corvettes for the Saudi Navy, Navantia has developed a complex program which, in addition to the construction and integration of its own systems, includes support for the life cycle of the ships and the supply of other services such as integrated logistical support, operational and maintenance training, supply of training centers with the delivery of Navantis family simulators and systems for the maintenance of the ships at the Jeddah Naval Base. For its part, the Hazem Combat System for the corvettes, based on Navantia Sistemas’ CATIZ, has demonstrated all its capabilities (anti-air, anti-submarine and anti-surface), being an extraordinary technological milestone for Navantia which shows its technological sovereignty in command and control systems and in the integration of complex systems.

The successes achieved in these programs have resulted in a strengthening of its international exposure, and in the development of strategic alliances and agreements aimed at seeking new export opportunities and local consolidation. It is currently participating in several programs with other shipyards and navies for the joint design and construction of military vessels, managing and coordinating its extensive experience in technology transfer, and establishing the optimal methodology for collaboration in both new construction and life cycle support.

In Turkey, the technology transfer contract with the company SEDEF for the local construction of a ship based on the Juan Carlos I, and the supply of its propulsion and integrated platform control system, has also been a success story for Navantia, having been delivered in December 2022.

Navantia also participates in the submarine competition for the Indian Navy, with the S-80 as a reference design, as well as in Poland, the Philippines and Canada.

And finally, Navantia participates in the consortium “Team Resolute”, together with Harland & Wolff for the construction of the Fleet Solid Supply program for the construction of three logistic ships for the Royal Navy.
